Sweet Caru passed away peacefully Saturday 6th June 2026. She was 14 years old.
I started walking Caru in March 2015. She had one pace for walking away from home, and a very different speed for getting back! Caru would let you know which direction she'd prefer (insist?) to walk and how long she'd like to sniff something interesting...and it was all interesting. One of her favourite routes would include a visit to Huttons (that offered BOWLS of treats...and if they had run out, she knew there were more behind the cash desk), a meet 'n greet at the old pet store on Northcote Road and a quick stop into Hennessy's along the way. Caru was a scavenger extraordinaire or what she might have preferred to be called: a foodie. At least a few times every park walk, Caru would pick a place to flop down and scratch her back on the grass. You had to indulge her; she didn't really give you a choice :)
Every one of my family members has walked Caru at some point over the years, including my elderly mum who had to rely on Caru's superior sense of direction to get back home: Caru knew the way and lunch was waiting so no time to spare! Occasionally she'd think some random jogger was my husband and she'd go racing up to them only to realise they simply shared the same taste in running attire. But if ever she was right, as sometimes she was, the greeting he received in the middle of the park was over-the-top and completely adoring.
This year Lucie had started to walk Caru and very quickly learned that the way to her heart was food! If she was less than enthusiastic for a walk, Lucie made it worth her while and they became fast friends.
Thank you to her family for entrusting her to my care for 11 years. I will never forget her. RIP Caru dog.
