Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night: Ensuring Your Dog's Comfort and Safety

The excitement of autumn's festivities can be unsettling for dogs, with Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night presenting particular challenges. Here's how to keep your dog safe and serene during these events.

1. Safeguard Treats and Fireworks

During Halloween, ensure all sweets out of your pet's reach. But if your dog accidentally gets into the Halloween supplies, it may not mean an emergency trip to the vet since it's really only dark chocolate that is particularly toxic (and most Halloween chocolate is milk chocolate - they'd practically have to eat their own body weight in milk chocolate to give you cause for concern). But of course, wrappers and lolly sticks can all be problematic so pop the bowl of sweets up high on a table. Likewise, keep fireworks and any associated items well away from curious noses. Even unused fireworks can be harmful if ingested due to their toxic substances.

2. Establish a Comfort Zone

Set up a safe viewing spot for your dog during Halloween to watch trick-or-treaters without being able to run out the door. For Guy Fawkes Night, close the windows, draw the curtains and pop on the TV or some classical music. This is a great time for a favourite chew or maybe some training for distraction.

3. Model Calm Behaviour

If your dog shows signs of nervousness, it’s important to act unfazed by the noise and commotion. While your instinct may be to comfort your pet, overdoing it can sometimes reinforce their fears. Instead, maintain a calm demeanor and engage in normal activities to show your dog there's nothing to worry about.

4. Stay In During Peak Times

Keep your dog indoors during trick-or-treating and fireworks. The strange sights and loud sounds can be too much for many pets. By staying in, you help ensure they remain calm and secure in a controlled environment.
